Missy Shana

Monotonix are a band from Israel. They play loud, messy, sweaty, intense, rock music. I saw them for the first time in Calgary at Sled Island Music Festival back in June. They played at a spacious punk venue called the Distillery. I can’t speak for everyone else, but I had no idea what I was in for. Let me tell you a bit about their performance.

During the first song, the lead singer Ami got up on stage and pulled down his short shorts, and stuck his microphone into his butt crack. Then he proceeded to move the microphone back and forth, while singing, from his ass to his mouth. The band had all their gear set up on the floor, so we were literally standing right next to them as they beat down on their instruments and moved from one side of the venue to another, while we all followed. In the next song, Ami decided that all that singing had made him thirsty, so he went around drinking other peoples beers, including mine, which he sprayed back into my face.

Monotonix are a three-man band, and their drummer Haggai sits on a small stool while he plays — or alternatively he sits on a small stool while the crowd lifts him up along with his drums as he crowd surf’s, all while playing and never missing a beat. I can’t even begin to explain the energy among everyone at the show that night, it was such a unique experience that gets me excited even today months later. If you ever have a chance to see them live, go for it! But be warned, don’t wear anything you don’t want to get stained or ripped, and if you wear glasses leave them at home, invest in contact lenses!
